PVC is the membrane that shrugs off what destroys the others: grease, oils, and chemical exposure. That single property makes it the specification wherever a DFW roof lives downstream of a kitchen exhaust stack (restaurants, groceries, food processing), and its performance credentials run deeper than the niche suggests.
The grease problem, and why PVC owns it
Kitchen exhaust deposits animal fats and oils across the roof around every vent, and those compounds chemically attack TPO and EPDM: membranes soften, swell, and fail early in a halo around the grease stack. PVC’s chemistry resists those oils by nature, not by coating. For food-service buildings this isn’t a preference, it’s the difference between a roof that serves its rated life and one that dies early in rings around the vents. Insurance carriers and franchise build-out specs increasingly say PVC around kitchens for exactly this reason.
Beyond restaurants: what else PVC brings
PVC welds like TPO, with hot-air fused seams stronger than the sheet, and it’s been doing so for decades longer; it is the original weldable single-ply, with a track record to match. It carries strong fire performance, stays notably flexible (helpful on roofs with movement or detail complexity), and comes in reflective white with the same cooling-load benefits TPO advertises. Chemical plants, labs, and buildings with rooftop exhaust of any aggressive kind all lean PVC for the same resistance logic as restaurants.
The trade-offs, honestly
PVC costs more than TPO at comparable thickness. The premium is real, and it’s the reason value-engineering defaults to TPO where grease isn’t in the picture. Two technical notes belong in any honest PVC conversation: plasticizer migration (the flexibility agents in PVC slowly leave the sheet over decades; quality modern formulations manage this well, cheap ones don’t, so manufacturer selection matters) and incompatibility with asphalt (PVC can’t touch asphaltic materials without a separation layer, which is a detailing item on re-covers over old built-up roofs, routine for crews who know PVC and a failure point for crews who don’t).
PVC in DFW service
Heat and hail treat PVC much as they treat TPO: reflective white fights the Texas sun, thickness and cover boards improve hail survival, and post-storm documentation protects the claim. The membrane’s flexibility is a quiet asset in our violent temperature swings, since sheets that move with the building stress their details less. Repair and service life
PVC repairs by welding, like TPO, and stays weldable impressively deep into its life. Specifying PVC right
A PVC specification worth signing names the manufacturer and membrane line (formulation quality matters more in PVC than in any other single-ply), along with thickness, attachment method, and the separation details anywhere the membrane meets asphaltic materials from the roof’s past lives. On food-service work, the spec extends past the membrane: grease containment at every kitchen stack, sacrificial walkway pads on the service paths, and a maintenance schedule that keeps the containment doing its job. Weld quality gets the same probe-testing discipline as our TPO work, and the closeout package carries both warranty layers in writing. One honest scoping note: if your building has no grease, chemical, or exhaust exposure and no reason to prize PVC’s specific strengths, we’ll say so and quote TPO alongside it; the premium should buy something.
