Aluminum is the roofing metal that cannot rust. Not resists rust, cannot: the metal’s own oxide layer seals it against the corrosion that steel spends its whole service life fending off. That single property makes aluminum the coastal roofing standard. In DFW, eight hundred miles from salt air, it plays a narrower and more interesting role: the light, corrosion-immune option for the specific situations that want exactly that.
What aluminum does better than steel
Corrosion immunity leads. Where steel’s life is its coating’s life, aluminum survives scratches, cut edges, and coating wear without rusting; the exposed metal simply re-seals itself. Weight comes second: aluminum runs roughly a third the density of steel, making it the lightest metal roof available. That’s relevant on structures where every pound matters, on re-covers where added load is constrained, and on large simple roofs where handling drives labor. Formability is third: aluminum takes complex shapes readily, which is why many interlocking metal-shingle and shake-profile systems are aluminum. The deep press-formed textures are easier to achieve than in steel.
The honest half: what steel does better
Aluminum is softer, and DFW’s defining weather event is frozen rock falling at terminal velocity. Hail dents aluminum more readily and more visibly than comparable steel; the standard mitigation is textured profiles, shake and shingle-look systems whose surface relief camouflages what a flat pan would display. Aluminum also moves more with temperature than steel, demanding disciplined floating attachment, and it costs more per square for less dent resistance. That trade is why inland Texas metal roofing defaults to steel, and why aluminum needs a reason.
The reasons aluminum gets specified here anyway
They exist, and they’re legitimate. Interlocking aluminum shingle systems bring concealed fasteners and Class 4 impact ratings in profiles steel doesn’t offer as gracefully. Weight-constrained structures favor the lightest metal: patio covers, porch roofs, additions on light framing, some re-cover situations. Owners with strong corrosion concerns (pool-adjacent structures living in chlorinated splash and evaporation, agricultural settings with chemical exposure) buy aluminum’s immunity on purpose. And a slice of the market simply prefers specific aluminum systems’ aesthetics, a fine reason when it’s an informed one.
The detail that matters: galvanic isolation
Aluminum in direct contact with dissimilar metals, copper above all and steel fasteners included, sets up galvanic corrosion in which aluminum is the sacrificial party. Competent aluminum work isolates religiously: compatible fasteners, separated flashings, and attention to what’s uphill (copper runoff onto an aluminum roof corrodes it; the reverse combination appears in more DIY disasters than any other pairing). This is standard practice for crews who work the material and a slow-motion failure for crews who don’t.
Aluminum in the Texas sun
Aluminum takes finish systems identically to steel: the same PVDF-versus-polyester grade split applies, and PVDF remains the answer for Texas UV. Bare and mill-finish aluminum reflects heat exceptionally well, and cool-pigmented finishes carry that into the color range. Fire performance is noncombustible, as with all metal. Service life for quality finished aluminum runs the same multi-decade arc as steel systems. The substrate outlasts the finish either way, and the finish chemistry sets the aesthetic clock.

When a DFW buyer asks about aluminum, our first job is the honest sort: if the driver is general “metal roof” interest, steel probably serves better per dollar and per hailstorm, and we’ll show the comparison. If the driver is one of aluminum’s genuine cases (weight, corrosion exposure, a specific interlocking system’s profile and rating), the quote specifies alloy-appropriate gauge, PVDF finish, the system’s impact rating with documentation for the insurance conversation, isolation details at every dissimilar-metal boundary, and the same two-layer warranty package as all our metal work.
