Steel is the default metal of residential roofing. It’s the material under most standing seam, most stone-coated systems, and most metal shingles installed across DFW. It earned the position on strength per dollar: no roofing metal delivers more structural capacity, dent resistance, and service life per unit of cost, provided its one dependency is respected. Steel’s story is the story of its coatings.
Bare steel rusts; roofing steel never runs bare
Everything between a steel roof and corrosion is a stack of engineered layers. The substrate protection comes first: galvanized steel carries a zinc coating that sacrifices itself to protect exposed edges; galvalume, the modern standard, blends aluminum and zinc for substantially better long-term corrosion resistance, and is what quality residential systems build on. Over the substrate goes the finish system: a primer, then the color coat. Here the industry splits into two grades that look identical on day one: PVDF (Kynar-family) finishes, which hold color and resist chalking for decades of Texas sun, and silicone-modified polyester (SMP), which costs less and fades faster. A steel roof quote that names the substrate and finish chemistry is a specification; one that says “painted metal” is a price.
Gauge: the number that predicts hail behavior
Steel’s thickness is measured in gauge, and lower is thicker: 24-gauge is the quality residential baseline for standing seam, 26-gauge is the workable middle where budgets push, and 29-gauge belongs on sheds. In DFW the gauge conversation is really a hail conversation. Thicker steel takes the same storm with visibly shallower denting, and on low-sun evenings that difference is the difference between a roof that shows its history and one that doesn’t. Panel profile matters alongside gauge: ribbed and striated profiles hide minor denting that flat pans display.
Steel versus the other roofing metals
Against aluminum: steel is stronger, cheaper, and dents less; aluminum wins only where corrosion exposure is extreme, mainly coastal salt air, which DFW doesn’t have. Against copper: copper buys permanence and prestige at several multiples of the cost. For the inland Texas market, steel is the rational center of the metal category, which is why the metal roofs you see going on across the metroplex are overwhelmingly steel under their finishes.
The forms steel takes on DFW homes
The same coated steel arrives as different roofs: standing seam (concealed fasteners, premium longevity), metal shingles (steel pressed into shingle, shake, or tile profiles, interlocking and concealed-fastened), stone-coated steel (granule-surfaced profiles), and exposed-fastener panels (R-panel and corrugated, the economy tier). The system choice matters more than most buyers expect: the same 24-gauge galvalume serves forty years quietly in a standing seam roof and demands decadal fastener maintenance in an R-panel roof, purely because of how it’s attached.
Heat, fire, and the insurance file
Light-colored and reflective-pigmented steel finishes shed Texas solar load meaningfully. Bare galvalume and modern “cool roof” pigments reflect far more than dark shingles, which shows up in attic temperatures and summer bills, especially over battened installations that add an air gap. Steel is noncombustible, a quiet advantage in ember-driven grass-fire scenarios on the metroplex’s rural edges. And the hail file: steel roofs frequently qualify for Texas insurance impact-discounts, with the standing caveat that some policies carry cosmetic-damage exclusions for metal, meaning dents that don’t breach may not be covered claims. What a steel specification should say
Substrate (galvalume), gauge (24 preferred, 26 acceptable with eyes open), finish chemistry (PVDF by name), fastening system (concealed where the budget allows), underlayment (high-temperature rated), and the trim and closure package. Those six lines are the roof; everything else in the quote is arrangement.
