Stone-coated steel is metal roofing in disguise: steel panels pressed into the silhouettes of shake, tile, or slate, then surfaced with stone granules bonded in acrylic. The pitch is having it both ways: metal’s hail behavior and longevity under a texture HOAs and traditional streetscapes accept. In DFW’s insurance climate, the pitch mostly holds up.
How the system works
The panels start as galvalume-protected steel, pressed into dimensional profiles that read as shakes, barrel tile, or slate from the curb. The stone-granule surface bonded over them does what granules do on shingles (UV armor and texture) while the steel underneath does what steel does: refuses to crack, split, rot, or burn. Panels interlock and fasten at their edges (concealed or semi-concealed depending on system), and the modular format installs over solid decking with underlayment, frequently on battens that add an insulating air gap under the panels.
The hail argument, made carefully
Most stone-coated steel systems carry Class 4 impact ratings, the top of the UL 2218 scale, and the failure mode difference is the real story. Hail that fractures concrete tile and splits shakes dents steel; a dented panel is still a functioning panel, where a cracked tile is a leak path. Weight, and why re-roofs love this material
Stone-coated steel weighs a fraction of the concrete tile it imitates, light enough that ordinary framing carries it without the structural review that real tile demands. That makes it the standing answer to a specific DFW question: “I love the tile look, but my house wasn’t framed for tile.” It’s also a strong re-roof material generally. Some systems even install over existing shingles where code and condition allow, though our default recommendation stays tear-off for deck inspection.
The trade-offs
Cost sits well above architectural shingles and generally below standing seam; either way it’s a premium-roof budget conversation. Walkability requires knowledge: panels support weight at their fastening points and battens, not mid-panel, so future trades (HVAC, solar, satellite) need to know where to step, a documentation item we leave with every owner. Granule shedding happens gradually and cosmetically, as on shingles. And repairs are modular but brand-specific: matching profile and blend years later is easier with major manufacturers, one more reason brand selection matters in the quote.

Flashing and penetration details follow the manufacturer’s system components rather than generic parts, which matters more on profiled panels than on flat roofing. Closeout includes the walkability map for future trades, both warranty registrations, and a small attic stock of panels from the original production run, the cheapest insurance there is against matching a discontinued blend a decade from now. It’s a longer quote than a shingle bid because it’s a longer roof; the specification depth is proportional to the decades being purchased.
